Honoring Stonewall- “Be Living Proof & Live Your Truth”

“I was wrong to think that this would be just another promotional date just like the others...I was wrong to feel that honoring the history of Stonewall wouldn't dredge up the deepest of emotions within my soul. I realize that as we get ready to honor Stonewall, we also honor those lost in the Orlando night club shooting. We also honor those closest who we've lost through depression, suicide and drug over doses. In return, we honor ourselves and each other, because it is not always easy to be “out” and it sometimes takes a lot of courage to live your truth. Without freedom fighters like the ones who took a stand at Stonewall, we as a community might not feel so free to openly share that special embrace with the person who holds our heart near & dear.

I was wrong when I thought I wouldn't be personally touched by this event; I lost my best friend, I lost my cousin, and in the process, lost irretrievable pieces of myself and so much more. Though sometimes life seems inexplicably trying, don’t forget that ultimately our time here on this earth is very short. Live life by your own terms and don't be afraid to live your truth to the fullest. Equality for all." -I.S.

Stonewall Inn catered to the poorest and most marginalized people in the gay community: drag queens, transgender people, effeminate young men, butch lesbians, male prostitutes, and homeless youth. Tensions between New York City police and gay residents of Greenwich Village erupted into more protests the next evening, and again several nights later. Within weeks, Village residents quickly organized into activist groups to concentrate efforts on establishing places for gays and lesbians to be open about their sexual orientation without fear of being arrested.
